It's Not Class or Ideology, Colour, Creed or Roots. The Only Thing That Unites Us is Doctor Marten's Boots!

Okay, so you may have to have been in Britain in the 80's, and probably of a certain age, to get the reference but you have got to agree with the man.

Doctor Marten's boots (& shoes for that matter), once so beloved of workies and punks are now ubiquitous, holding a well-earned place as a mainstream fashion favourite. Things have moved on a lot since the days of black or oxblood leather., look at all the loveliness above.

And such fabulous children's boots. I am totally gutted that the purple mini-goth ones didn't come in my size.

I have been a proud Doc's wearer for about 35 years. They are comfy, practical and go with pretty much anything, I have even worn them with a business suit and got a load of compliments (I forgot my "proper adult" shoes - needs must. It was all good in the end).

So why am I wittering on? You will never guess what is a 10-minute car ride from me? Only the Doctor Marten's Factory Shop! As luck would have it, I wore my old knackered ones to work in the lab and one of the girls at work mentioned that it was close by. I am in boot-shopping heaven and am planning another visit this month too. There is no such thing as "too many shoes".

The shop sells a lot more than just footwear, with a great selection of socks, bags and clothing, although the few times I have been most of the clothes looked to be mostly small sizes. All the stock is either factory samples or overstocks from their shops so the selection is eclectic and you just have to be lucky. They restock three times a week and the prices are very low considering how much DMs normally retail for. I bought 4 pairs of boots at £40 each but prices range with what the style/colour/original price was.

So if you are a Doc's fan the place is really worth the trip. If you fancy driving there the address is 71 High Street, Wollaston, Northants, Wellingborough, NN29 7QE. Apparently there is also a Kurt Geiger factory shop in the same area so I will let you know what it is like when finally I find it.

A final word -  the last few weeks have been filled with really sad, needless events at home and abroad. Definitely a time to come together, not drive ourselves apart. Listen to the song. Even though the message is 30 year's old it still rings true.

And bloody VOTE tomorrow if you are in the UK, especially if you are a woman. It wasn't that long ago that we got a voice. Use it.

So do you have a favourite brand or style of footwear? Are you a Doc's wearer or think that they are terrible?

Take care, lovelies.

Kxx

  1. I've never had Docs (oh wait, did I have some in the late 90's? Maybe I did???) My husband wears the all winter though, then switches to Birks and Chucks in summer. Such a brand name boy! ;)

    1. Hi Gillian, they are all good shoes. I have Birks and Chucks too. and I suppose that those brands have been around a good while for a reason. DMs are great for the winter with their non-slippy soles. When I was younger people wore DMs as they were really, really cheap and lasted for ages. They were the sort of thing that you only saw on workmen, not the trendy brand they are now. I am glad though as they now come in some great colours. Xx

  2. I wore nothing but Docs back in the 80s and loved that song to bits. To my eternal regret I didn't buy the cherry red Diva boots when they were launched at the Clothes Show in 2008, I've been hunting eBay to no avail ever since. The flat ones just don't feel like me these days.
How exciting to find an outlet! Jon loves his but flatly refuses to wear anything other than the British-made ones (they cost a bloody fortune). xxx

    1. Hi Vix, I just googled the Diva boots and almost cried when I beheld their loveliness. I don't remember these or I would have had a few pairs. The red ones are a thing of beauty and are utterly gorgeous. Since my high heels days are pretty much over I am loving the flat ones. They are the perfect supportive shoe for my bad back and dodgy ankles. You are right though, they would be really incongruous with your beautiful dresses. We asked in the shop and apparently they only sell the British-made ones in there. Definitely hit the DM jackpot. Xx

  3. Ha, I knew the quote immediately - I remember it from The Young Ones. My husband wears Docs, as does one of my workmates (her purple Adventure Time ones are her faves).

@Vix - have you heard of Solovair? Their factory used to supply Doc Martens before a lot of production moved to China; they still make boots to the same classic quality but at a slightly lower price 'cos of not having the DM brand on. https://www.solovair-shoes.com/shop/

    1. Hi Mim, I think that purple Adventure Time ones would be fantastic. DMs are really great, you husband and colleague have good taste. I really miss the days of good telly. I moaned at the time but programs like "The Young Ones" just wouldn't get make now, not to mention all the things like "Boys from the Blackstuff" and some of the edgier dramas. Sorry, having a rant. I have never heard of the Solovair but you will never guess. They are made in the same village as the DMs and have a factory shop there too. The next time I am up there I will give it a visit and report back. The shoes look great. Thanks for the info. Xx

  4. Hello Kelly!

You finally got there...you were clearly in shoe heaven. Four pairs - you naughty girl you! I never have worn Doc Martens and have never owned a pair; they're a bit too clunky/chunky for my taste. But what do old ladies like me know?

I hope all is well with you and yours in Rushden...

    1. HI Veronica, I did! I was a bit naughty but Sprogzilla has nicked 2 pairs already. They are a bit too clunky and I have wondered about how they look as I have huge feet at the best of times. Even though they are not the smallest, most elegant shoe I do love them. They are so comfy to wear (but not break in). Life in Rushden in fine. I have been working all hours though for the last 3 weeks. Thank God that is over. Too old to keep that pace up. Going to sleep for a week. Hope to catch up soon. Xx

  5. Absolutely LOVE THEM. But.... and here we put on a sad face and accept sympathy .... I had an accident in the home affecting my right leg which led to cellulitis, which led in turn to vascular dermatitis. A large red patch which chafes on boots like the Doc's, plus due to health issued, swollen legs and/or ankles mean I can't wear boots much at all. OK sympathy scrounging over with. Lucky you though, hope for glam shots of feet in said boots!!
Just so you know, I've got the blog going again. Try to keep your excitement in check....

    1. Hi Edwina, that is pretty bad. I have a friend who has cellulitis and it is really not a fun thing to have at all. I hope that it is not too much of a bother to you at all if you are just in shoes. No sympathy scrounging , that is a pretty painful thing to have. I will definitely post some photos wearing my new boots some time. I am really glad to hear that you have got your blog going again, I missed reading it. Sending best wishes to you & yours. Xx

  6. Oooh these are very swoon worthy! Their appeal just goes on and on, my son did pretty well in his GCSEs last year and was kindly given some money by his grandparents and the only thing he wanted was a pair of DMs. Perhaps it's a 'boy thing' but he just went for classic black :)

    1. Hi Josie, that is so great (both the GCSE's and the DMs) they really do have a classic appeal. I have a pair (or two) of black DMs. They go with everything, look great and are so practical. They have some great pairs and lots of colours and patterns even for boys/men. I met someone the other night that also goes to the shop and has 56 pairs. Shoe goals. :) Xx
